Unprecedented Heat: In 2022, UK temperatures "moved" 330 kilometres south on average.
The UK experienced record-breaking temperatures in 2022. To highlight just how high these were, we paired places in the UK with those across Europe that had similar average temperatures in 1990-2020.
The results are dramatic. Places across the UK had temperatures in 2022 that were typical in places in France, Spain and Portugal in 1990-2020.
As last year showed, UK homes, infrastructure and local nature weren't intended to withstand these kinds of temperatures. This map helps show how worrying climate change is for the people and places we love in the UK.
This research was compiled by Callendar for Round Our Way, a group highlighting the impact of climate change in the UK and ensuring more ordinary people get their voices heard in this debate.
